24th International Congress of History of Science, Technology and Medicine

Funding and support

Several organisations have made commitments to offer financial support to help visitors who may not have sufficient local funds to attend the Congress. We will develop these pages as a clearing-house for information about the different funding opportunities as they are announced.

Please note that the local Congress organisers cannot advise on any of these funding possibilities. Please address any queries directly to the contact addresses given in the funding calls.

The announcements so far are as follows:

British Society for the History of Science, Scheme 1: Non-UK participants

Announced 7 November

The British Society for the History of Science (BSHS) will be able to offer financial assistance to a small number of overseas delegates attending the Congress. The value of each award will be 250 British pounds.

Eligibility: the competition is open to anyone who has had a paper accepted (either stand-alone or as part of a symposium) and can make a convincing statement of financial need. In order to claim an award you must register for the Congress by the end of the early registration period (14 April 2013), and actually attend the Congress.

Application deadline: 28 February 2013

Please submit an application to Lucy Tetlow, the Executive Secretary of the BSHS, as a file attached to an e-mail to the following address:<office@bshs.org.uk>. The application should consist of a letter including the following elements (there is no form that you need to use):

  • Your name, institutional affiliation, and contact details including e-mail address
  • The title of your paper (and the symposium, if applicable)
  • A statement of financial need, up to 1 page. National, institutional and personal factors may be mentioned. No documentation is necessary, as we will judge the cases on trust; therefore it is essential that you give us an honest and unexaggerated statement of your situation, so that we can attempt to make a fair allocation of awards.

Decisions will be made by the Council of the BSHS, and announced by 15 March 2013. Funds will be made available directly after the Congress on confirmation of attendance, and can be applied towards any Congress-related expenses at the awardee's discretion. We regret that funds cannot be made available before the Congress.

British Society for the History of Science, Scheme 2: BSHS student members

Announced 7 November

The British Society for the History of Science (BSHS) is pleased to offer financial assistance to its student members attending the Congress. The value of each award will be 205 British pounds, which is the amount of the conference fee for early registration (ending on 14 April 2013).

These bursaries will be available to all student members of the BSHS, but you must make an application by 31 January 2013. The application should simply consist of an e-mail attachment submitted to Lucy Tetlow <office@bshs.org.uk>, the Executive Secretary of the BSHS, giving your name and institutional affiliation and stating that you would like to receive a bursary. (Please note that you can also apply separately for travel assistance from the BSHS Butler-Eyles fund.)

Decisions will be made by the Council of the BSHS, and announced by 28 February 2013. Funds will be made available directly after the Congress on confirmation of attendance.
