Mailing list archive
Message 20: 2 July 2013
Dear colleagues
To those who have recently signed up: welcome to the Congress mailing list! This list provides regular updates on Congress activities, and there will be regular updates in the busy period before and during the Congress.
As this mailing list will be used to carry important practical information about the Congress, we ask that everyone who has registered or intends to register remains subscribed. If you wish to unsubscribe, however, you can do so via the link at the bottom of any message.
Here are this week’s announcements:
1. Registration
2. Programme updates
3. Visits, walks, tours and excursions
4. The meanings of Madchester
5. Public talk featuring David Wright: new venue
6. Free online access to Maney Publishing journals for Congress delegates
7. Mailing list archive
1. REGISTRATION
Registration for the Congress closed yesterday. Thank you to all who submitted applications before the deadline. If you haven’t had an acknowledgment yet, don’t worry: it is being processed, and you will receive a response very soon. Please address any registration queries to mcc.reg@manchester.ac.uk.
The total number of participants is yet to be precisely established, but is somewhere between 1700 and 1800 – making this our largest ever event and, we hope, a defining moment in the development of the field.
If you had intended to register but have not done so, please contact us immediately at enquiries@ichstm2013.com to discuss your situation. We regret that, given the scale of the administrative task and our need to confirm numbers for purchasing, venue safety obligations etc, we cannot guarantee your inclusion at this stage.
2. PROGRAMME UPDATES
We are working steadily through the huge task of revising the Congress programme at
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/
to address recent chair nominations, withdrawals, and restructuring of symposia and sessions. Most changes will be minor; wherever we need to propose a more serious change (such as a change of date), we will discuss this directly with the participants involved.
If you have requested or notified us of a change, and don’t see it listed, it will probably appear within the next 24 hours. If you don’t see it then, please send us a reminder.
Please note that in order to meet deadlines for duplicating print and USB material, we need to finalise most of the content this week. Some parts have already been finalised. If you require changes and have not notified us, please contact us at enquiries@ichstm2013.com immediately with full details. Thank you for your understanding!
One big change which you will notice, in the newest version of the programme, is the inclusion of maps showing the locations of paper sessions and special events. We are gradually extending this to all parts of the programme, and hope it will be useful for orientation during the meeting.
3. VISITS, WALKS, TOURS AND EXCURSIONS
There are many fascinating places to visit in and around Manchester – and several iconic locations within a few minutes’ walk from the Congress site. We have recently updated our page at
to give a flavour of the wealth of activities we have co-ordinated for the Congress. The full listing is here:
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/m/tours.html
Recent additions to the programme include
- a whole afternoon of activities at the Museum of Science and Industry, including collections demonstrations and gallery tours (Thursday)
- private tours at the Science Museum Group’s other sites in the north of England, the National Railway Museum, York, and National Media Museum, Bradford (Thursday; please arrange your own transport)
- a private handling session and tour of Chetham’s Library, the oldest public library in the English-speaking world (Thursday)
- walking tours exploring the life and haunts of John Dalton, Quaker meteorologist, originator of the modern atomic theory, and colour-blind pioneer of colour-blindness research; and the majestic, squalid and profoundly disruptive growth of the city nicknamed Cottonopolis (both Tuesday)
- a specially commissioned walk on modernism in Manchester (Thursday)
- tours of the wonderful Godlee Observatory, with its original papier-mâché dome perched on top of Manchester’s former Technical School
...and don’t forget previously announced activities such as the regular Manchester Museum tours and campus walks led by specialist historians; the vintage bus trip to the Museum of Transport; the excursions to Quarry Bank Mill and Chatsworth, and the Manchester smellwalk...
These and many other activities will be co-ordinated by our sterling team of Congress stewards. A dedicated Congress Events Desk will be in operation at University Place, to help you to reserve tickets and find directions; and places for most events can be reserved in advance by email. See the website for full details.
4. THE MEANINGS OF MADCHESTER
If Manchester is no longer Cottonopolis, it is still very much a music city. Besides its eclectic breadth of folk, jazz and opera, our iCHSTM Fringe will be covering pop, rock and electronic dance (the divisions between which have never truly counted for much in Manchester) through a club night with Dave Haslam, once a house DJ at the iconic Haçienda nightclub and now a writer, broadcaster and lecturer on the past and present of Manchester’s popular culture. On Thursday night at the Jabez Clegg, Dave will present a set taking us back to the period around 1990 when the Haçienda, and the phenomenon that was ‘Madchester’, held the ears of the world. More details here:
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/s/K334.html
This club night follows on from a special Congress discussion session on Manchester’s music scene and its surrounding cultural influences, shceduled for Wednesday afternoon. Dave Haslam will be joined by musician Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order), historian of technology Susan Schmidt Horning, and historian of medicine James Mills, to discuss the emergence and influence of a scene formed by a particularly potent HSTM cocktail of new electronic production techniques, new performing and recording spaces, and new recreational drugs.
This event is not part of the public programme, but is open to all Congress delegates. See here for more information:
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/s/E343.html
...and for an iconic Manchester experience from another era, please note that tickets for the Turing Machine Opera on Monday and Tuesday are selling fast. If you are interested in this unique opportunity to see Ooppera Skkaala’s innovative audiovisual production on the life and career of Alan Turing, please reserve your ticket soon by contacting boxoffice@ichstm2013.com. For more details, see the public programme listings at
5. PUBLIC TALK FEATURING DAVID WRIGHT: NEW VENUE
Please note that Friday evening’s public event featuring David Wright, author of Downs: the history of a disability and winner of the 2013 Dingle Prize of the British Society for the History of Science, has a new venue. It will now take place in the Kanaris Lecture Theatre of the Manchester Museum, very close to the main Congress site. For full details, see the website at
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/s/L341.html
