Message 18: 17 June 2013

Dear colleagues

To those who have recently signed up: welcome to the Congress mailing list! We are now sending out weekly updates on Tuesdays, with occasional additional announcements. There will usually be a full update of the Congress programme at http://www.ichstm2013.com/programme/ each Monday before the message.

As this mailing list will be used to carry important practical information about the Congress, we ask that everyone who has registered or intends to register remains subscribed. If you wish to unsubscribe, however, you can do so via the link at the bottom of any message.

This week’s announcement is a little later than usual, but contains some interesting items:

1. Turing Machine Opera: UK Première

2. Announcing the iCHSTM2013 Fringe!

3. Things to see and do in Manchester: new sections

4. Programme updates

5. Presentation queries

6. Registration

1. TURING MACHINE OPERA: UK PREMIÈRE

We’re excited to announce that we have been able to secure the first UK performance of The Turing Machine Opera to coincide with the Congress. Devised by Ooppera Skaala of Helsinki, this acclaimed piece explores the life and work of the iconic computer theorist Alan Turing (1912-1954), who worked for the last six years of his life at the University of Manchester.

The innovative production weaves together soaring vocal lines with live dance, atmospheric ambient soundscapes and sampled electronic rhythms, set off by stunning 3D graphics, to tell the story of a tragic genius. It will be performed at the Capitol Theatre of Manchester Metropolitan University, a few minutes’ walk from the Congress site, on the evenings of Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 July.

Before the performance, guests will be given an opportunity to take part in Decode/Recode, a collective media performance featuring interactive artworks, sound, lights, performers and VJs.

The event will be open to the public, but we have secured some tickets for Congress delegates, and accompanying people, at a discounted charge of £10 per person.

For full details, see the Congress programme guide:
http://www.ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/s/L346.html

We are also planning a short ‘Turing walk’, taking in two of the sites of Turing’s work at the University, on Monday lunchtime:

2. ANNOUNCING THE ICHSTM2013 FRINGE!

The Turing Machine Opera is only one of the events being promoted as part of the Congress ‘Fringe’, an informal social programme of music and comedy events scheduled for weekday evenings during the Congress. The programme also touches on the key transitions in Manchester’s local culture and history, from the hardship of Industrialisation to the rise of dance music in the iconic Haçienda night club.

Confirmed events include the following:

Monday
Folk music and storytelling: The Noisy Frame - lives of clothmakers in song and testimony

Tuesday
Stand-up comedy: XS Malarkey

Wednesday
Academic research-driven stand-up comedy: Bright Club

Thursday
Club night: Dave Haslam, Haçienda DJ

All these events will take place at the Jabez Clegg pub, conveniently located within a couple of minutes’ walk from the Congress venue, where a range of HSTM-themed beers will be on offer!

For more information on all Fringe activities, please see the website:

3. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN MANCHESTER: NEW SECTIONS

We have recently expanded our guide to Manchester at
http://www.ichstm2013.com/explore/
with some new sections, concentrating this time on leisure activities without a history of science/technology/medicine dimension. If you are bringing family members who don’t share your all-consuming passion for iconic textile machinery – or merely want a break from it yourself – the following links may be useful:

(*) Guaranteed free of pilgrimages to scientists’ working sites, influential healthcare institutions, and industrial archaeology. (At least, there’s not much industrial archaeology.)

4. PROGRAMME UPDATES

The Congress programme at
http://www.ichstm2013.com/programme/
has received an extensive update this week. Many sessions now carry timings and room locations. Please be aware that these are provisional only: most changes from now on will be minor, but we anticipate that many sessions will change in location or undergo minor timing changes in the final two weeks of planning. Details will be confirmed in early July.

5. PRESENTATION QUERIES

We have received a number of queries from paper presenters asking about the time allotted to speak.

For those in organised symposia (codes P, S and W) or special sessions (code E), this will be determined by the organiser(s) of the individual symposia, who are identified in the programme.

For those in compiled sessions (codes Q and T), please work on the assumption of 4 papers per 90-minute slot: allowing time for handover, this translates to 15 to 17 minutes’ presentation time plus a reasonable question period. Owing to withdrawals, some presenters may find themselves in a 3-paper session. In this case, more time may be available – but please be prepared to speak at the shorter length if necessary.

In answer to questions about technical provision: all Congress presentation rooms include (at no extra charge) a standard data projector (beamer) wired to a Windows PC running PowerPoint. Audio facilities are usually provided but not guaranteed by default: please let us know if you plan to show video with sound, or have any unusual requests.

6. REGISTRATION

At the time of writing, approximately 300 people appear on the programme but have not yet registered. The deadline for registration is Monday 1 July. In the interests of ensuring a coherent programme for attendees, those who have not submitted their registrations by this point will be withdrawn from the programme before it is finalised.

If you have not already done so, please help us to minimise the difficulty of administering this unprecedentedly large programme by either registering as soon as possible at

http://www.ichstm2013.com/registration/

or, if you are unable to attend, contacting submissions@ichstm2013.com to confirm your withdrawal.

Please note that the programme, as defined for the Manchester Congress, is a participant programme: non-participants cannot be listed, and we cannot arrange for papers to be read in absentia.
