Dear colleagues

Here is a special announcement for those who have registered, or intend to register, for the International Congress in July. (We will return to our regular sequence of weekly announcements next week).

Nearly 1600 people have now registered to attend the Congress, and we anticipate that this number will rise. This will make the Congress the largest academic conference ever held on the chosen site. The venues for presentation are large and can comfortably accommodate this number, but the scale of the Congress has particular implications for lunchtime food provision. Although the Oxford Road campus area contains a range of cafés, restaurants and sandwich shops, they are mostly relatively small and will be extremely busy during the peak lunchtime period between 12.30 and 14.00 each day.

To avoid long queues/lines, we strongly recommend that you reserve your lunch arrangements in advance before registration closes. Advance registration allows you to collect your lunch using a pre-paid voucher, saving valuable time for conversation with friends and colleagues. There are two options:

• a hot two-course meal, provided in the restaurant at University Place, the central Congress venue (within a couple of minutes’ walk of all the academic session rooms)
• a pre-packed sandwich lunch, available for collection at University Place.

Both options cost £6.75.

The sandwich option is recommended for those who will be attending committee meetings, special discussion sessions, or walks, tours and excursions taking place at lunchtimes. The lunchtime schedule is available at

and has been updated today with outline details of the latest confirmed events, including a series of walks exploring the history of the University campus and some of its famous inhabitants.

We ask that all registrants confirm their lunch options as soon as practical, and before registration closes on Monday 1 July.
