Message 13: 21 May 2013
Dear colleagues
To those who have recently registered: welcome to the Congress mailing list!
We are now exactly two months from the start of the Manchester Congress. For the remaining weeks leading up to the event, we intend to deliver an update via this mailing list every Tuesday, giving the latest details of Congress planning, useful information about visiting Manchester, and updates for those who will not be able to attend in person. The online programme at <http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/> was updated yesterday, and we will be aiming to perform a full update each week in advance of the mailing.
Here are this week's announcements:
1. Lunch reservations
2. Formal social programme
3. Tours and excursions
4. Reminder: accommodation reservations close TODAY (Tuesday 21 May)
5. BSHS Travel Guide competition
6. Reminder: please use the correct contact address!
1. LUNCH RESERVATIONS
We strongly recommend that you reserve your lunch options before the Congress. Although it will be possible to buy lunch at a number of cafés and restaurants around the Oxford Road campus, all of them will get very busy at lunchtimes. Pre-ordering your lunch is the best way to avoid the queues.
Vouchers for a hot two-course lunch can be purchased in advance for use in the restaurant at the main Congress venue. Alternatively, you can pre-order a packed sandwich lunch. Both options cost £6.75.
The sandwich lunch option is recommended for those who will be attending committee meetings, special discussion sessions, or walks and tours taking place at lunchtimes. To help you confirm your decision, we are developing a second Congress timetable showing lunchtime as well as evening events:
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/lunch-evening.html
This timetable will be expanded over the coming weeks as a few more events are finalised.
If you have not yet registered, you can reserve your lunches as part of the registration process:
http://www.ichstm2013.com/registration/
Or, if you have already registered and want to add lunches to your reservation, please email the University of Manchester conference office at mcc.reg@manchester.ac.uk with details of your request.
2. FORMAL SOCIAL PROGRAMME
The formal social programme for the Congress consists of four evening receptions, at locations including the Manchester Museum, Manchester Town Hall, and the Museum of Science and Industry; and the Congress Dinner at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United Football Club. Full details of all these events are now available here:
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/m/formal.html
There will also be a variety of informal social events – mostly music and comedy – and entertaining public events with an HSTM theme, which will be open to Congress attendees. Some of these events are already listed on the programme; there will be further announcements when the schedule is finalised.
3. TOURS AND EXCURSIONS
Alongside the previously announced trips to Jodrell Bank, Quarry Bank Mill and Chatsworth, Congress volunteers will be managing a wide range of opportunities for guided walks and tours and visits to sites around Manchester. The arrangements for these will vary: some attract a small charge, while most are free to Congress attendees; some require visitors to make their own travel arrangements. A summary of all confirmed listings is now available at
http://ichstm2013.com/programme/guide/m/tours.html
and will be updated periodically. There will also be an Events Desk on-site throughout the Congress, providing information and tickets.
4. REMINDER: ACCOMMODATION RESERVATIONS CLOSE TODAY
The deadline for booking accommodation via the Congress is today (Tuesday 21 May). The Congress organisers have made block reservations in hotels across central Manchester, at special reduced rates, and have also secured rooms in several University of Manchester halls of residence (dorms). Full details are available at
http://www.ichstm2013.com/hotels/
To take advantage of these special rates, if you have not yet registered, you should do so, including your room reservations, by the end of today. The registration form is at
http://www.ichstm2013.com/registration/
If you have already registered, and want to add accommodation to your booking, please email the University of Manchester conference office at mcc.reg@manchester.ac.uk with full details of your accommodation requirements.
5. BSHS TRAVEL GUIDE COMPETITION
The British Society for the History of Science (BSHS) has announced its first History of Science Travel Guide Competition. If you want to spread the word about a site (building, structure, locality...) important to the history of science, technology and medicine in your part of the world – or which features in your own research – please consider submitting an entry.
The BSHS Travel Guide (<http://www.bshs.org.uk/travel-guide>) is a growing resource for information on scientific sites around the world, written for historians and tourists alike. The competition is open to all, and the winner of the best new entry will receive a prize of £100. 10 runners-up will receive prizes, and have their entries highlighted on the Travel Guide. All entries of sufficient quality will be featured on the Travel Guide.
The entries will be judged prior to the Congress , where the winning entries will be announced.
Entrants should bear the following conditions in mind:
• Entries must be on a scientific site not already featured in the Travel Guide.
• Entries must be up to, but no more than, 1000 words.
• Entries must be in English.
• Entries should include a picture, either one you have taken of the site or from a creative commons resource.
• Entries should be aimed at an audience with an interest in popular history of science.
• Footnotes and references are not required but some further reading, where applicable, is encouraged.
• Entries should include the address, location, and further details (e.g. website address) of the site.
• Entries must include the author’s name, position and institutional affiliation.
• Entries should follow the style guideline at http://www.bshs.org.uk/travel-guide/style-guide-for-contributors.
• Submission of your article constitutes permission for the BSHS to publish it on the online Travel Guide, but copyright remains with the author(s).
Please submit your articles by email. Entries should be in doc or pdf format, and submitted to web@bshs.org.uk by Monday 1 July 2013.
The BSHS is the adhering body to the DHST for the United Kingdom, and has overall responsibility for the Manchester Congress.
6. REMINDER: PLEASE USE THE CORRECT CONTACT ADDRESS!
We are still receiving a large volume of misdirected mail. Please help us to manage the very large volume of Congress correspondence as efficiently as possible by sending your queries to the correct address:
- mcc.reg@manchester.ac.uk for registration queries, changes to registrations, and requests for official documentation of invitation to support visa or funding applications
- enquiries@ichstm2013.com for programme scheduling and general queries.
Please DON'T forward queries to individual members of the Local Organising Committee. Several colleagues are dealing with very large volumes of correspondence on other parts of Congress administration, and we cannot guarantee that they will respond.
Thanks again for all your contributions to the Congress.
Best regards
iCHSTM 2013 Local Organising Committee
