Message 06: 11 March 2013
Dear colleagues
Here are the latest updates on the the 2013 International Congress, together with some answers to common questions.
1. STAND-ALONE PAPERS AND TIMETABLE
Unfortunately, recent changes mean that we have had to postpone the release of the stand-alone paper session groupings and timetable / schedule slightly. We apologise for this, and are aware that many attendees are waiting for an announcement in order to make travel plans. We will do all we can to ensure the information is released later this week.
As previously announced, the timetable for pre-arranged symposia is already available at
http://www.ichstm2013.com/programme/timetable.pdf
2. CONGRESS START TIME
The Congress begins with a welcome reception on the evening of Sunday 21 July. The opening plenary and first paper sessions are on the morning of Monday 22 July. For more detail, please go to
http://www.ichstm2013.com/programme/when-arrive.html
3. TRAVEL INFORMATION
The Travel section of the Congress website has been extensively updated with information about flight and rail connections to Manchester, hotel directions, and advice on getting around the city. Start at
http://www.ichstm2013.com/travel/
4. RESEARCH RESOURCES
Some researchers have expressed an interest in taking the opportunity to use local archives or library special collections during their stay. We have compiled some useful information on the collections of the University of Manchester Library and Museum of Science and Industry here:
http://www.ichstm2013.com/explore/research/
International visitors with rail connections via London may also wish to note the convenient location of the British Library, Wellcome Collection and Library, and British Museum. Brief details and a map are available at

5. PRESENTATION TIME
We’ve received several queries about the length of time available to each presenter.
For symposia, this will be decided by the symposium organisers. Each session is 90 minutes long, but the organisers’ decisions about whether to take questions after each paper, and (where applicable) how much time to assign for commentary, will determine the time available for paper presentation. Please discuss this with the organisers directly.
For stand-alone papers compiled into sessions, please note that we will assign 4 papers to each 90-minute session wherever possible. Questions will be taken after each paper, rather than at the end of the session. To allow time for changeover and introductions, please work on the basis that you have 20 minutes including questions. If you prepare a 15-minute presentation, this allows for a 5-minute question period.
6. CHAIRS FOR SYMPOSIA
Advice for symposium organisers: if your symposium doesn’t already have confirmed chairs, please don’t start approaching people as possible volunteers for chairing just yet. It is better to wait until the full timetable is announced, so that the details of all contributors are available, and in order to check for possible clashes with other sessions.
Confirmation of chairs is not urgent: we will be happy to receive nominations in April or May.
Thanks again for all your contributions.
Best regards
James Sumner
