The Sciences and Empires Group is a Commission of the Division of the History of Science and Technology of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science. The group itself was founded in conjunction with an international meeting held at UNESCO in Paris in 1990. The theme of that meeting was ‘Sciences and Empires: European Expansion and Scientific Development of Asia, Africa, America and Oceania.’ The group has hosted meetings and workshops in France, China, the USA, and Mexico, among other venues. Sciences and Empires maintains an email list which may be accessed at https://lists.lsit.ucsb.edu/listinfo/sciemp.
The group serves as a major forum for discussions by historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science, technology, and medicine who study how these activities intersect with colonialism, imperialism, and postcolonialism.
