Chemical Heritage Foundation

The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) is an independent non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, consisting of a research library, museum, and center for scholars, all of which focus on the history of science and technology. CHF’s center for scholars includes both the Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry and the Center for Contemporary History and Policy.

The Beckman Center supports nearly 20 fellows in residence, creating a community of scholars in the history of science, technology, and medicine, with a focus on chemical topics. It also sponsors conferences, public lectures, and is a partner with the University of Chicago Press in publishing Synthesis, a scholarly, peer-reviewed book series on the history of chemistry, broadly defined.

The Center for Contemporary History and Policy identifies key issues at the intersections of science, technology, and medicine that can benefit from careful research, analysis, and new perspectives. The Center develops projects that mobilize history, using archives, interviews, case studies, and oral histories in order to bring original perspectives on contemporary science and technology-based societal challenges

CHF’s Othmer Library of Chemical History contains significant primary resources, including rare books, archives, and images from the history of chemistry and related sciences, technologies, and industries, dating from the 15th through the 21st centuries. Travel grants are available to use the extensive collections.

The CHF Museum features a permanent exhibition and changing exhibits that explore the history of chemistry and the role science plays in the modern world. Making Modernity, CHF's permanent exhibition, shows how chemistry has impacted our lives—frequently in unexpected ways.
