History of Geography Inter-Union Commission (International Geographical Union and DHST)

The Commission on the History of Geography (formerly known as Commission on the History of Geographical Thought) was created in the 21st International Geographical Congress, held in New Delhi in 1968. Besides being part of the International Geographical Union (IGU), since 1976 also acts as inter-Union Commission within the Division of History of Science and Technology of the IUHPST. The Commission on the History of Geography aims to be a forum for promoting and exchanging ideas and outcomes on both the history of the field and, more widely, the history of geographical knowledge, experiences and practices, and their consequences and usefulness for understanding the contemporary world, providing IGU and IUHPST as a whole with a reflective view on the practice and meanings of geography. Through its 45 years existence, the Commission hascarried out aprolonged active workwithinboth the IGU and the IUHPS,reflected, for example, inthe nearly 45scientific meetings heldand the publication of morethan 40 volumes (including its annual serial collection and some proceedings, monographs and journal special issues). The Commission publishes an annual Newsletter (in English and French) and edits the Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies annual serial collection (31 volumes, with nearly 470 essays, published from 1977 up to present).
