The Pacific Circle, established in 1985, is devoted to the study of the practice and history of science, exploration, discovery and interpretation in the Pacific, broadly defined. Our membership, which stands at around 200, represents thirty countries, and includes research scientists, government officers, independent scholars, and institutions, as well as academic historians and social scientists. We share a wide range of interests in maritime history, the history of the life sciences (especially botany and marine biology), and the history of the physical sciences (including oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy). We engage with current studies in environmental history, especially in relation to the discovery and conservation of natural resources, and with the place of the Pacific in the history of anthropology and the social sciences. We pay special attention to the nature and consequences of globalisation in the Pacific, and to the changing geopolitics of science and technology in the region. Our activities include exchanges of information and conferences, and the publication each April and October of the Bulletin of the Pacific Circle, which carries editorials, book reviews, current bibliographies and conference reports. For further information, please contact Professor Roy MacLeod at roy.macleod@sydney.edu.au. For a subscription to the Bulletin, please contact our Editor, Prof. Peter Hoffenberg, at peterh@hawaii.edu.
